Upcoming Films at the Hayes Performing Arts Center in March

Compiled by Kathleen McFadden

Because the calendar at the Hayes Center is so packed in March, movie lovers will have to settle for just two films this month. Admission to shows is $5, and tickets are available at the box office prior to the show. For info, call the Hayes Center at 828-295-9627.

Movie: They Drive by Night (1940)

Date: Monday, March 10

Times: 2:30 and 7:00 p.m.

Description: This film noir stars George Raft and Humphrey Bogart playing brothers trying to make a go of the independent trucking business. The film combines comedy with thrills for the first half hour or so, as the Fabrini boys battle crooked distributors and unscrupulous rivals while establishing their transport company, but then the movie gets serious, with a trucking accident and then a murder. The film also stars Ida Lupino, Ann Sheridan and Alan Hale.

Movie: The Glenn Miller Story (1954)

Date: Monday, March 17

Times: 2:30 and 7:00 p.m.

Description: This entertaining biography of the big-band leader who created a new sound in music and died at the height of his popularity authentically captures the spirit of the ‘40s. James Stewart is perfectly cast as Glenn Miller, and guest stars Ben Pollack, Louis Armstrong, Gene Krupa, Francis Langford and the Modernaires recreate the excitement of the big bands in the swing era. June Allyson plays Miller’s wife.
