ASU Gospel Choir Plays Hayes Center March 20

Story by Anna Oakes

Appalachian State University’s Gospel Choir travels off campus to perform a concert at the Hayes Performing Arts Center in Blowing Rock on Thursday, March 20, at 7:30 p.m.

The 145-student choir will sing for about an hour, performing a cappella pieces, gospel anthems and challenging works by major artists in the gospel music field. The ASU Gospel Choir band, consisting of bass, piano and percussion, will accompany the choir.

Gospel Choir Conductor Jason Thompson, a Blowing Rock resident, said he is glad to see the choir performing at the Hayes Center.

“It’s such a great location and venue, so close to home, to help our students to spread our message through gospel music,” Thompson said. “We look forward to any opportunity to take our students off the campus.”

The ASU Gospel Choir is both a popular class and an active ministry. Performing for prisons, churches and schools, the Gospel Choir has toured in several major cities, including Atlanta, Nashville and Washington, D.C. The choir performs a variety of sacred music including Negro spirituals, black gospel, and contemporary praise and worship.

Tickets to the concert are $5. For more info, call the Hayes Center Box Office at 828-295-9627.
