March Is Red Cross Month
Commemorate the Red Cross’s Work by Donating Blood
The month of March is generally associated with bitterly cold weather and the hope that spring will soon arrive. But March is also American Red Cross month, and one of the best ways to support the Red Cross’s work is to donate blood
You have four opportunities this month to help the Red Cross with blood donations, and the need is urgent for all blood types.
The most exciting blood drive will be held at Watauga High School on Friday, March 7, from 7:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The high school is hoping for its largest blood drive in history with a goal of 500 or more donors. During the blood drive, an automated external defibrillator will be at the high school sports complex so the public can learn how the portable electronic device diagnoses and treats cardiac arrest.
Additional blood drives this month will be held on Wednesday, March 12, at Green Valley School from 1:30 to 6:00 p.m., on Thursday, March 20, at ASU’s Plemmons Student Union from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and on Friday, March 28, at Earth Fare in Boone from 12:00 to 4:30 p.m.
All donors who donate blood or platelets from March 1 to 31 can enter to win a cruise for two with Delta roundtrip airline tickets.
Blood drive contacts are Watauga County American Red Cross Executive Director Sonny Sweet at 828-264-8226 and Senior Donor Recruitment Representative Lu Johnson at 1-800-234-1646/ext 206.
WASU and Mountain Television Network will air interviews with employees and volunteers during American Red Cross month, and the Watauga County Public Library will feature a display including a storyboard and handouts.
Volunteers constitute 97 percent of the Red Cross’s workforce, serving as members of the board, instructors teaching lifesaving skills, disaster action team members, office administrators, event organizers and more. More than 700 volunteers make the work for Watauga County chapter of the American Red Cross possible.
