The calendar says spring, but residents of the High Country know that blossoms, blooming flowers and singing birds are a few weeks away still. Carlton Gallery is getting a jump-start on spring by filling the gallery walls with multicolored flowers by Martha Gimlin and new paintings of vibrant landscapes and still lifes by Joyce Norwood and Janice Gay-Maker.
Martha Gimlin realistically renders the flowers growing in the gardens on her farm in oil on canvas. Lilies in many bold colors, orchids, irises, rhododendrons, lady slippers, trilliums, roses and peonies are a few of Gimlin’s favorites that she paints in her signature style.
The exhibition of new oils on canvas by Janice Gay-Maker reflects land and urbanscapes, and her paintings convey peace, tranquility and mystery. Gay-Maker particularly likes the dawn and dusk hours because the colors are intriguing and change from moment to moment.
For her impressionist paintings, Joyce Norwood applies layers of color via brush and pallet knife. Her light and colorful paintings of children playing on the beach express the beauty and innocence of childhood. Norwood’s garden series paintings of her daughter Gee Gee capture the atmosphere and tranquility of a beautiful summer day.
In anticipation of spring, visit Carlton Gallery and view the many landscape paintings by the local and regional artists the gallery represents. The gallery is located 10 miles south of Boone and 7 miles north of Linville on Highway 105. Winter hours are 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday.
