Concerts Feature Voice, Organ and More at ASU

Leon Couch III presents an organ recital in Rosen Concert Hall on Sunday, March 30, at 4:00 p.m. Story by Anna Oakes

Through the remainder of March, the concert offerings of the Hayes School of Music at Appalachian State University range in experience, from music students to an accomplished composer, and in timbre, from the brassy blare of the trumpet to the rich tones of the organ.

Unless otherwise indicated, concerts take place in the Broyhill Music Center on the ASU campus. For more information about any of these performances, call 828-262-3020.

 

Student Saxophone Recital Thursday
Saxophonist Hannah Eckerd, a student in the Hayes School of Music, presents a recital in the Recital Hall on Thursday, March 20, at 6:00 p.m. Admission is free.

 

P. Kellach Waddle Guest Recital Thursday
Following the performance of composer P. Kellach Waddle’s music on Wednesday, March 19, the composer himself will perform a guest recital on the string bass in Rosen Concert Hall. The guest recital takes place Thursday, March 20, at 8:00 p.m. Admission is free.

Waddle will perform classical and contemporary works on unaccompanied bass.

The program includes Bach’s Suite No. 2 in D Minor for Unaccompanied Cello, Daniel Baldwin’s Fox Tales: Suite for Unaccompanied String Bass and Donald (Man-Ching) Yu’s Shivering (A Concert Piece for Solo Bass).

Waddle also will perform several of his own compositions, including Rhapsodic Variations on a Theme of Sibelius, Rhapsodic Variations On a Theme Of Tchaikovsky and Sonata in Two Movements for Solo Bass after Ernest Hemingway’s “The Sun Also Rises.”

Waddle enjoys a career as one of the most performed and prolific composers of his generation. He also maintains a busy career as a solo bassist, an orchestral and chamber musician and a conductor.

He has performed as a singer and bassist in many blues, pop, soul and country bands throughout his career, including concerts with Grammy Award-winning artists such as B.J. Thomas and Larry Gatlin. He also has been a pit musician, playing for nearly four dozen musical theater productions.

 

Leon Couch III Lectures March 27
Leon Couch III will present a lecture on Bach, Buxtehude and musical rhetoric Thursday, March 27, at 8:30 a.m. in Rosen Concert Hall. He also will talk about Schenkerian analysis Thursday, March 27, at 1:00 p.m. in Room 204 Broyhill Music Center.

Couch is the college organist at Converse College and an assistant professor of organ and music theory.

 

Student Trumpet Recital March 27
Trumpeter Sarah Storms, a student in the Hayes School of Music, will perform a recital on Thursday, March 27, at 6:00 p.m. in the Recital Hall. Admission is free.

 

Student Flute Recital March 27
Flutist Talina Pasour, a student in the Hayes School of Music, presents a recital on Thursday, March 27, at 8:00 p.m. in the Recital Hall. Admission is free.

 

Student Voice Recital March 28
Hayes School of Music student Harrison Bumgardner will perform a voice recital on Friday, March 28, at 6:00 p.m. in the Recital Hall. Admission is free.

 

Collegium Musicum March 28
Collegium Musicum, a student ensemble that performs music from the 17th and 18th centuries, will perform Friday, March 28, at 8:00 p.m. in the Recital Hall. The recital is free and the public is invited.

The Hayes School of Music ensemble is directed by Alicia Chapman. Ensemble members typically perform on reproductions of period instruments from the School of Music’s collection of recorders, string instruments with Baroque bows and gut strings, and various early wind and brass instruments.

The March 28 program includes Handel’s “Overture” from Rodrigo and Trio in G Major, Telemann’s Sonata in E minor, Joseph Bodin de Boismortier’s Sonata in G Major and  Chaconne by Henry Purcell.

 

Student Bass and Guitar Recital March 29
Bassist Judith Smith and guitarist Peter Tarricone, students in the Hayes School of Music, will perform in the Recital Hall on Saturday, March 29, at 6:00 p.m. Admission is free.

 

Student Cello Recital March 29
Cellist Hannah Utley, a Hayes School of Music student, presents a recital on Saturday, March 29, at 8:00 p.m. in the Recital Hall. Admission is free.

 

World Music Concert March 30
Enjoy music from around the world when members of the Hayes School of Music present a World Music Concert on Sunday, March 30, at 2:00 p.m. in Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free.

 

Organist Leon Couch III March 30
Leon Couch III will present an organ recital featuring the works of Buxtehude, Bach and Eben on Sunday, March 30, at 4:00 p.m. in Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free.

Couch presents organ recitals, master classes and lecture recitals throughout the United States. Recognized nationally for his scholarship and teaching since 1993, Couch was named the 2007 Nelson visiting scholar at Northwestern College.

While on the faculty at Texas A&M University, Couch was the 2005-06 Montague Teaching Excellence Scholar for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Couch also has taught organ studio, music theory and undergraduate mathematics at the University of Cincinnati.

Couch earned two doctoral degrees from the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music: a doctor of musical arts in organ performance and a Ph.D. in music theory. He has undergraduate degrees in physics, mathematics and music from the University of Florida.
