Event Features Seven Bands on Two Stages
Story by David Brewer
ASU’s chapter of the Music and Entertainment Industry Students Association will host its second annual MEISA Music Festival at Geno’s in Boone this Thursday, March 20. The event will feature seven bands and will begin at 8:00 p.m. The cover charge is $7 and you must be 18 to enter.
Bands appearing at the MEISA Music Festival include Do It To Julia, Bafoodus, Harvard, 26 Ways, Young and Running, C Monsters and The Actuaries. The music will be spread over two stages set up at opposing ends of the venue, allowing event organizers to keep the music rolling without interruption throughout the night.
“We’re really excited,” said MEISA President Alicia Torres. “It’s going to be bigger and better than last year.”
The MEISA Music Festival is also a battle of the bands. Last year’s winner Do It To Julia is slated as the headlining act for Thursday’s event and is not competing with the other six bands. The winner of the battle will receive a cash prize, airplay on campus radio station WASU, a feature in The Appalachian and a meeting with executives from ASU’s student-run Split Rail Records label.
Proceeds from the event will be used to send students to the upcoming national MEISA conference in New York City.
According to Torres, the purpose of the festival is not only to bring several bands together for a night of great music, but also to bring various campus entertainment entities together under one roof instead of working against each other by separately promoting and hosting events.
MEISA is comprised of 46 ASU students, the majority of whom are enrolled in the music industry studies program. In recent years, the club has been working hard to build a reputation as a campus organization that sponsors quality music events while scouting talent for Split Rail Records. The group recently hosted a singer-songwriter showcase event at Legends and is hoping for a sell-out crowd at Thursday’s event.
