Huntington’s Disease Fundraiser April 19

Students in a recreation management program planning class at Appalachian State University will host a 5K run/walk fundraiser at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 19, at the Boone Greenway Trail.

In addition, a 1-mile fun run for children under 12 will begin at 8:45 a.m.

The preregistration fee, if postmarked by Wednesday, April 16, is $15. On race day, the entry fee will be $20, but additional donations will be gratefully accepted. The entry fee for the children’s fun run is $5.

Participants will enjoy live music from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Each participant will receive a T-shirt, and door prizes from several local businesses will be raffled immediately after the event.

The goal is to raise $4,000. Proceeds from the event will be invested in the research on treatments and a cure for Huntington’s disease.

Huntington’s disease is a degenerative brain disorder that slowly diminishes the affected individual’s ability to walk, think and reason. Eventually, people with Huntington’s disease become totally dependent on others for their care. Currently, approximately 30,000 people in the United States have Huntington’s disease, and 15,000 Americans are at risk of inheriting the disease from a parent. At this time, there is no effective treatment or cure. For more information about Huntington’s disease, click to www.hdsa.org.
