Five middle grade students in the Watauga County Schools have been recognized for excellence in music performance at state and regional competitions.
In orchestra, Blowing Rock seventh grader Doria Kosmala, Cove Creek eighth grader Sadie White and Valle Crucis eighth grader Ledah Finck each qualified for first violin in the Western District All-State Honors Orchestra, and Mabel seventh grader Jessica Simon qualified for Repertory Orchestra on the viola.
The Western District orchestra auditions included 130 violinists seeking one of 76 spots and 40 viola players seeking one of 25 spots. Each of the selected students will travel to Grimsley High School in Greensboro on May 2 and 3 to rehearse and perform a public concert that will be recorded.
In band, Valle Crucis eighth grader Ledah Finck and Bethel seventh grader Jordan Pope have successfully auditioned for the Northwest All-District Middle School Band. The two Watauga County Schools students were among 800 middle school band students from across northwest North Carolina who auditioned for a spot in one of the two 90-member bands composed of some of the best young musicians in their region.
Ledah Finck qualified for the Repertory Band on the flute and Jordan Pope qualified for the Symphonic Band on the baritone horn. Pope also qualified as an alternate for the All-State Band. As members of the Northwest All-District Middle School Band, the two students participated in a two-day band clinic and concert held at RJ Reynolds High School in Winston-Salem last month.
