Cove Creek Preservation and Development Monthly Barbecues Begin April 25

Story by Celeste von Mangan

The cafeteria in the Historic Old Cove Creek High School is once again serving meals, not to hungry school children this time around, but to community members as part of the Cove Creek Preservation and Development’s fundraising efforts.

Cove Creek Preservation and Development will hold monthly barbecues in the school’s renovated cafeteria, the Red Raider Room, every fourth Friday from April through October. This year’s first barbecue is Friday, April 25, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Diners will enjoy barbecue and two sides, including baked beans, coleslaw, a drink and dessert. Each take-out or eat-in plate costs $8 for adults and $5 for children.

Volunteers barbecue onsite to ensure that the food is fresh. “The barbecue is excellent, and the price is good for what you get,” said Jack Simpson, of Cove Creek Preservation and Development. “And we would like to see as many people out as would like to come.”

All proceeds from the barbecue go toward enhancing the Red Raider Room, and this year the focus is on finishing the display cabinets, shelving and doors and installing glass in the cabinets.

The Red Raider Room is available for rent during the year for reunions, meetings and other community gatherings.

Cove Creek Preservation and Development board members and volunteers coordinate and host two other big events—MusicFest ‘n Sugar Grove and Farm Heritage Days.

“The barbecues are every bit as good as what we have at the MusicFest,” said Andy Andrews, volunteer and barbecue chef. “And you get to eat in the old historic and renovated lunch room. Come join us. It’s terrific!”
