We’re not sure how they did it, but the Hayes School of Music at Appalachian State University managed to cram 16 concerts—all but one of them free—into a single week, including top-notch guest performances, well-prepared student recitals and two jazz concerts.
Unless otherwise indicated, concerts take place in the Broyhill Music Center on the ASU campus. For more information about any of these performances, call 828-262-3020.
Student Cello Recital Thursday
Cellist Paul Antony-Levine, a student in the Hayes School of Music, will perform a recital on Thursday, April 3, at 6:00 p.m. in the Recital Hall. Admission is free.
Cellist and Pianist Guest Recital Thursday
Cellist David Gee and pianist Lynne Mackey present a guest recital on Thursday, April 3, at 8:00 p.m. in the Recital Hall. Admission is free.
Among the works the duo will perform are pieces by Fauré, Bazelaire and Beethoven. Additionally, the duo will perform a piece recently written for them by Tim Mainland and works by Manuel de Falla and Astor Piazzolla.
The Gee-Mackey duo has performed in the United States, Europe and Africa. They recently returned from a tour of Spain and Morocco where they presented new works of American composers, and listeners heard their performances on the English language radio of the Costa del Sol.
Student Percussion Recital Friday
Stephanie Wilson, a percussion student in the Hayes School of Music, presents a recital on Friday, April 4, at 6:00 p.m. in Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free.
Student Euphonium and Tuba Recital Friday
Euphonium player Patrick Watkins and tuba player Will Saunders, students in the Hayes School of Music, will perform a recital in the Recital Hall on Friday, April 4, at 8:00 p.m. Admission is free.
Student Trumpet Recital Saturday
Trumpeter Erin Ellenburg, a Hayes School of Music student, performs a recital in the Recital Hall on Saturday, April 5, at noon. Admission is free.
Student Clarinet Recital Saturday
Clarinet player Erica Shelton, a student in the Hayes School of Music, will present a recital on Saturday, April 5, at 6:00 p.m. in the Recital Hall. Admission is free.
Student Violin Recital Sunday
Violinist Nami Hashimoto, a graduate student in the Hayes School of Music, presents a recital on Sunday, April 6, at 2:00 p.m. in the Recital Hall. Admission is free.
Guest Organ Recital Sunday
David Runner will present an organ recital on Sunday, April 6, at 3:00 p.m. in Rosen Concert Hall. The program includes works by Krebs, Kellner, Locklair, Hancock and others. Admission is free. Runner will also present a lecture of his recital music on Thursday, April 3, at 8:30 a.m. in the Rosen Concert Hall.
David Runner has been professor of music at Milligan College since 1972, where he teaches organ, piano, voice and music theory. He earned master of music and doctor of musical arts degrees from the Eastman School of Music where he was a student of David Craighead and the late M. Alfred Bichsel.
Student Brass Ensembles Sunday
The student brass ensembles of the Hayes School of Music will perform a concert in the Recital Hall on Sunday, April 6, at 6:00 p.m. Admission is free.
Student Piano Recital Sunday
Pianist Jonathan Carter, a student in the Hayes School of Music, performs a recital on Sunday, April 6, at 8:00 p.m. in the Recital Hall. Admission is free.
Jazz Ensembles I and II April 7
The Hayes School of Music Jazz Ensembles I and II will present a joint concert on Monday, April 7, at 8:00 p.m. in Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free.
Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia April 8
Members of the pledge class of music fraternity Phi Mu Alpha will perform a recital on Tuesday, April 8, at 6:00 p.m. in Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free.
Woodwind Chamber Ensembles April 8
The Hayes School of Music woodwind ensembles will perform chamber music on Tuesday, April 8, at 8:00 p.m. in Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free.
Hayes School of Music faculty members Jon Beebe, Alicia Chapman, Scott Kallestad and Nancy Schneeloch-Bingham coach the student performers.
The ensemble Blazing Bassoons will perform Divertissements by Philip Catelinet. A flute ensemble will perform Sextet for Flutes by Matt H. Doran. A saxophone quartet will perform Sailor’s Hornpipe by Henry Cowell.
Also on the program are Trio for flute, horn and piano by Eric Ewazan, James Towne Trilogy by Catherine McMichael performed by a flute sextet, Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro Overture performed by a saxophone quartet and Deux Pièces pour une Musique de Nuit by Eugene Bozza performed on flute, oboe, clarinet and bassoon.
The program concludes with Flight of the Bumble Bee by Rimsky-Korsakov performed by a flute quartet and Three Preludes by George Gershwin performed by a saxophone quartet.
Student Voice Recital April 9
Lauren Hayworth, a graduate voice student in the Hayes School of Music, will present a recital on Wednesday, April 9, at 6:00 p.m. in the Recital Hall. Admission is free.
Jazz Ensembles in Blowing Rock April 9
The Hayes School of Music Jazz Ensembles I and II will perform a concert on Wednesday, April 9, at 7:30 p.m. at the Hayes Performing Arts Center in Blowing Rock. Todd Wright and Rod Berry are the directors. Admission is $5.
Sigma Alpha Iota Recital April 9
The pledge class of music sorority Sigma Alpha Iota will perform a recital on Wednesday, April 9, in the Recital Hall at 8:00 p.m. Admission is free.
