Donations Needed for Playhouse Consignment and Rummage Sale

Story by Celeste von Mangan

Spring has officially arrived in the High Country and if spring cleaning is a yearly ritual in your household, you may want to donate some of your unwanted and unused items to the High Country’s only nonprofit children’s museum and play space for families. Every year, The Children’s Playhouse holds a consignment sale in conjunction with the Baby and Parenting Fair. The two-day “fun-raiser” will take place on Friday, April 18, and Saturday, April 19, beginning at 8:00 a.m.

Playhouse Director Kathy Parham has put out the call for high-quality baby, children and maternity clothing. Consigners earn 60 percent, and the remaining 40 percent is a tax-deductible donation to The Children’s Playhouse.

“We’re looking for people to consign with us,” said Parham. “We’re also happy to take rummage donations. It’s going to be a great sale. Besides clothing, we are accepting furniture, tools and other items for the consignment sale. Adult clothing does not sell as well, so we do not recommend donating any, besides the maternity clothes. This is a great opportunity for people to keep their unwanted items out of the landfill and to also help The Children’s Playhouse, which offers year-round fun for families.”

Items destined for the consignment portion of the event must be almost new or in very good condition. Clothing has to be free of stains and tears.

“The consignment clothing would include outfits you would send your child to school in,” said Parham, “high quality items—and they are sold for a quarter of the original cost. It’s an opportunity for people to buy name brands at a fraction of their original cost.

“This will be our third Baby and Parenting Fair, and we always do it in conjunction with our big consignment sale.” said Parham. “People can reserve a booth at the baby fair—it’s a great way to promote your business. We’ll also have the baby races with the crawler and toddler divisions and an airwalk, plus lots more fun activities and a silent auction. And we’re planning a zero waste event. The playhouse is very green, and this is a very green activity, recycling used clothing and goods.”

The presenting sponsor for the event is Appalachian Regional Healthcare System. Other sponsors include Blue Ridge Pediatrics, Boone Drug and the pediatric dental practice of Drs. Mayhew, Conn and Scheffler.

Take your consignment and rummage donations to The Children’s Playhouse at 400 Tracy Circle in Boone. Playhouse volunteers can pick up large items if you make arrangements in advance.
