Boone Mayor Loretta Clawson recently visited the staff of the Boone Bicycle Initiative, a nonprofit that’s offering a no-cost way to use alternative transportation. By loaning bicycles, the goal of the initiative is to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, thus encouraging better air quality, reduced traffic congestion and a healthier community.
The Boone Bicycle Initiative began when a small group of students from Appalachian State University wrote a grant proposal to the EPA. With those startup funds and support from the Town of Boone, ASU and the local community, the program now has bicycles available to loan, and offers two methods of distribution:
• Cash Deposit System: A refurbished bicycle is available for a $50 refundable cash deposit. The $50 deposit covers Boone Bicycle Initiative’s investment in the bicycle, including a helmet, lock and necessary parts. At any time during the deposit period, Boone Bicycle Initiative will take care of adjustments and a limited number of larger repairs within reason. You can renew the loan term without forfeiting the deposit.
• Credit Card Deposit System: A credit card deposit is required to obtain one of the new commuter bicycles that Boone Bicycle Initiative has purchased. As part of this program, you must bring your bicycle in every two weeks for a checkup, but you can check it out again. These bicycles also come with a lock and helmet. If you do not return the bicycle, as well as the lock and helmet, your credit card will be charged for the bicycle’s full retail price.
To apply for a bicycle through the Boone Bike Initiative, click to www.bikeboone.org for an application or visit the shop in the downstairs level of the Turchin Center on the Howard Street side during hours of operation: Monday from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. and Sunday from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. The Boone Bicycle Initiative is also accepting donated bicycles during operating hours.
