This Week at the Hayes School of Music

Appalachian State University isn’t renowned for its music school for nothing. Check out the outstanding talent the Hayes School of Music has to offer by attending a concert this week.

Unless otherwise indicated, concerts take place in the Broyhill Music Center on the ASU campus. For more information about any of these performances, call 828-262-3020.

 

Student Piano Recital Thursday
Pianist Linda Markas, a student in the Hayes School of Music, will present a recital on Thursday, April 17, at 6:00 p.m. in the Recital Hall. Admission is free.

 

Jazz Vocal Ensemble Thursday
Appalachian State University’s Jazz Vocal Ensemble performs Thursday, April 17, at 8:00 p.m. in Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free.

Directed by Jason D. Thompson, the eight-member ensemble will perform “All of Me” by Seymour Simons and Gerald Marks, “The More I See You” arranged by Larry Lapin, “My Romance” arranged by Gene Puerling, “Fantasy” by Earth, Wind and Fire, “This Masquerade” arranged by Steve Zegree and “My Shining Hour” arranged by Larry Lapin. 

Matt Powers on piano, Sam Filip on bass and Ryan Lassiter on drums will accompany the ensemble.

 

Student Guitar Recital Friday
Guitarist Alma Sehic, a graduate student in the Hayes School of Music, will perform in the Recital Hall on Friday, April 18, at 6:00 p.m. Admission is free.

 

Men’s Glee Club Friday
The Men’s Glee Club at Appalachian State University will present a free concert Friday, April 18. The performance begins at 8:00 p.m. in Rosen Concert Hall. Jason D. Thompson directs the vocal group, and Lisa Runner is the accompanist.

The program includes “Joyfully Sing” by Linda Steen Spevacek, “Ave Maria (Angelus Domini)” by Franz Biebl, “The Last Words of David” by Randall Thompson and “Last Letter Home” written by Lee Hoiby and based on a letter written by a U.S. Army private to his unborn son shortly before the soldier died in Iraq in 2003.

 

Student Trumpet Recital Saturday
Trumpeters Jonathan Chesson and Scott Feldman, Hayes School of Music students, will present a joint recital on Saturday, April 19, at 2:00 p.m. in the Recital Hall. Admission is free.

 

Student Saxophone Recital Saturday
Saxophonist Evan Raines, a student in the Hayes School of Music, will perform a recital in the Recital Hall on Saturday, April 19, at 4:00 p.m. Admission is $5 and benefits the Watauga Arts Council.

 

Student Guitar Recital Saturday
Guitarist Daniel Read, a Hayes School of Music student, presents a recital in the Recital Hall on Saturday, April 19, at 6:00 p.m. Admission is free.

 

Appalachian Symphony Orchestra with Comedian Dan Kamin Saturday
On Saturday, April 19, at 8:00 p.m., the Appalachian Symphony Orchestra presents The Classical Clown, a performance with comedian Dan Kamin, in Farthing Auditorium. Admission is free.

 

Clarinetist Catherine Wood Sunday
Clarinetist Catherine Wood presents a faculty recital on Sunday, April 20, at 2:00 p.m. in Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free. 

Wood is a member of the Hayes School of Music faculty. Flutist Nancy Schneeloch-Bingham and pianists Bair Shagdaron and Susan Slingland will accompany her. 

The program features Bohuslav Martinu’s “Sonatina,” Robert Muczynski’s “Duos for Flute and Clarinet, op. 24,” Johannes Brahms’ “Sonata No. 1 in f minor, op. 120” and Aaron Copland’s “Concerto.”

 

Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia’s American Music Review Sunday
Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, a music fraternity, presents an American Music Review on Sunday, April 20, at 4:00 p.m. in Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free.

 

Liberace String Quartet Sunday
The Liberace String Quartet will give a concert on Sunday, April 20, at 6:00 p.m. in the Recital Hall. Admission is free.

 

Honors Voice Recital Sunday
Honors students Anna Eschbach and Rachel Hall will present a voice recital on Sunday, April 20, at 8:00 p.m. in Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free.

 

Faculty Composer Recital April 21
The Hayes School of Music presents the music of faculty member Scott Wynne on Monday, April 21, at 8:00 p.m. in Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free.

 

University Singers and Chamber Singers April 22
The University Singers and Chamber Singers present a Contemporary Music Festival on Tuesday, April 22, at 8:00 p.m. in Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free.

The University Singers are a group of about 60 voices; the Chamber Singers have 16 to 20 members. Stephen M. Hopkins conducts the two ensembles.

 

Chamber Music Recital April 23
The Hayes School of Music presents a chamber music recital as part of the Contemporary Music Festival on Wednesday, April 23, at 8:00 p.m. in Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free.
