Town Approves Lease with Wal-Mart for Community Garden

Final Approval Hinges on Upset Bid Process
The Boone Town Council has unanimously approved a lease agreement with Wal-Mart for the site of the Leola Street Community Garden, an arrangement that will give the company the green space it needs to expand the store in compliance with the town’s development ordinance. In return, the town will receive $60,000 per year for 45 years, and Wal-Mart will continue to allow the space to be used as a community garden. (Full Story)

School Board Hires New Superintendent

Marty Hemric Takes the Top Job July 1
On July 1, Marty Hemric will step into the superintendent’s job for Watauga County Schools. At a special meeting on Tuesday morning, the Board of Education unanimously approved Hemric’s hiring and introduced him to the Central Office staff and the nine school principals. (Full Story)
