Story by Celeste von Mangan
For a girl and her father, a special night out together that includes formal dress, dinner and dancing is a rare happening in this day and age. On Saturday, May 10, the YMCA of Avery County is hosting the second annual Princess Date Night for girls age 5 and older at the Grandfather Golf and Country Club. Grandfathers and father-figures are encouraged to participate, as are adult daughters. Attendees must purchase tickets for the event by Friday, May 2.
“We did the first one last year and it was so sweet,” said coordinator Holly Naumowich. “We had over 50 participants, with daughters ranging in age from 5 to 45. This year we have one woman who is 50 years old and she registered with her father. It is a special night for little girls and big girls.”
A social replete with hors d’oeuvres and punch starts the evening off at 6:00 p.m. At 6:30 p.m. a formal dinner is served and then dancing begins as a live DJ spins popular discs. The special meal is something of a surprise, but organizers promise that children and dads alike will love it. Last year’s meal included a separate menu for the younger set and steak and shrimp for dad.
“We are hoping this year’s Princess Date Night in Avery County will be even bigger than last year,” said Naumowich. “Last year, all these girls came in with their beautiful dresses. Some wore tiaras and many had corsages. The evening finished with all the girls dancing. It is not a fundraiser; we just wanted to be able to hold a special event for dads and their daughters.”
Margaret and Ed Powe hosted the 2007 event and they will return this year to host the 2008 Princess Date Night.
“It was such a special night,” said Naumowich.
Tickets cost $38 per father and $12 per daughter and must be purchased in advance. No tickets will be sold the door.
Registration forms for the Princess Date Night were sent to many area schools and are available at the front desk of the Avery YMCA. Click to www.ymcaavery.org to register online.
