Benefit Concert for Foster and Adoptive Children in the High Country Saturday

Story by Corinne Saunders
The High Country Foster and Adoptive Parent Association (HCFAPA) will sponsor a benefit concert at Watauga High School from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 3, with proceeds going toward the financial needs of local foster and adoptive children and their families.

Amantha Mill, Melissa Reaves and Echo Park will perform at the concert, bringing something for everyone with their respective bluegrass, rock and classic rock musical styles. Laura Kaufman was also scheduled to perform but is no longer able to attend.

Advance tickets are available for $10 at the Department of Social Services office on Poplar Grove Extension, at the Eggers law office on West King Street or at All American Hearing on State Farm Road.

Tickets will also be available at the door for $12. Children ages 12 and under attend free when accompanied by a paying adult.

Other events scheduled for the evening of the concert include a $4 hot dog supper, a raffle and a bucket auction with assorted local prizes and gift certificates. An information booth about the HCFAPA will also be set up to explain the organization’s work in the area and the many ways in which the public can get involved.

The organization’s mission statement declares that by working together, its members will help ensure that every child receives excellent care and advocacy while in the foster care system. The association is open to all foster and adoptive parents of the High Country, both private and agency.

Foster care is designed to provide a temporary home, either before children are placed in a permanent home or until their original family situation is resolved. Many of the children in foster care have special needs and all require constant support and services from their foster or adoptive families.

The benefit concert provides an opportunity for all residents of the High Country to enjoy an evening of music while supporting these local children, most of whom come from extremely difficult home situations, with histories of abuse, abandonment or neglect.
