Story by David Brewer
Only one legendary band can truly answer the incessant drunken calls for “Freebird.” That band is Lynyrd Skynyrd. On Friday, September 12, the kings of Southern Rock will make their way to the High Country for a show at ASU’s Holmes Convocation Center.
Formed in 1970 in Jacksonville, Fla. and named for a strict high school gym teacher (Leonard Skinner), Skynyrd penned a slew of ‘70s rock classics that have stood the test of time including “Sweet Home Alabama,” “Gimme Three Steps,” “Mr. Saturday Night Special,” “That Smell,” “What’s Your Name” and many more.
At the peak of their success in 1977, three members of Skynyrd were killed when their chartered plane crashed into a Mississippi forest. The loss of lead singer and principal songwriter Ronnie Van Zandt, as well as guitarist Steve Gaines and his sister, backup singer Cassie Gaines, effectively put an end to the group for 10 years.
In 1987, several surviving members of Skynyrd reunited for a one-time tribute performance and recording to celebrate the band’s legacy. Overwhelmed by the positive response from thousands of rabid Skynyrd fans, the band reformed permanently and continues to tour and record successfully.
Promoters have not yet announced a show time or ticket prices for Skynyrd’s Holmes Center performance. For more info as it becomes available, click to www.theholmescenter.com.
