Appalachian State University’s Turchin Center for the Visual Arts offers a number of summer programs for children, teens and adults through its Community Art School. The Community Art School studio classroom is located on the top floor of the Turchin Center’s Arnold P. Rosen Family Education wing.

FOR CHILDREN
Children can explore the arts of China, puppet making and papier-mâche this summer at the Turchin Center.
Crocodile Puppet Theatre, for ages 7 to 13, takes place Monday to Friday, June 2 to 6, from 10:00 a.m. to noon each day. Assisted by Dr. Vicky Grube’s art students, children will create puppets and perform with them in a production at the annual Puppet Festival. The cost is $35 for Turchin Center members and $50 for nonmembers.
The Annual Puppet Festival, taking place Saturday, June 14, invites kids ages 7 to 13 to perform in puppet plays or just come watch. The event begins at 10:00 a.m. and is free.
Exploring China, for ages 4 to 6, is an opportunity for children to learn about and create Chinese-inspired works on Saturday, July 19, from 10:00 a.m. to noon. Led by Dee Pecillio and special Chinese guests, the workshop costs $5 for Turchin Center members and $10 for nonmembers.
Also on July 19 is TCVA Family Day, an event for all ages from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Bring the family for a free day of art, activities and live music.
Papier-Mâche Dragons, for ages 6 to 12, takes place Monday to Friday, July 28 to August 1, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Children will learn about dragons from around the world and create their own papier-mâche creatures. Cost is $35 for members and $50 for nonmembers.
FOR TEENS AND ADULTS
For older artists, drawing, metalworking, beading, quilting and writing are among the arts to be explored at this summer’s workshops.
The Art of Sketchbook Drawing, offered Tuesdays and Thursdays, June 3 to 12, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. with artist Una Pett, offers participants the chance to enhance, begin or revive sketchbook practices. Cost is $40 for Turchin Center members and $75 for nonmembers.
Art-I-Facts: Art and the Enchanted Object takes place Monday to Wednesday, June 30 to July 1, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Facilitated by Melissa C. Ball-Martin and Rebekah King, the program targeted to teachers but open to everyone. Participants will record their personal journeys of discovery and investigation in an altered book format. The cost is $60 for members, $100 for nonmembers and free for certified art teachers.
Cloisonné: Colorful Copper explores the application of enamel to metal to create colorful, functional pieces Monday to Friday, July 7 to 11, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The cost is $125 for members and $185 for nonmembers.
Figure Drawing with Tim Ford is Monday to Friday, July 14 to 18, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The workshop focused on drawing the figure from life is $125 for members and $175 for nonmembers.
Glass Beads, a beginning jewelry class with Grace Hall, is Monday to Friday, July 14 to 18, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Cost is $100 for members and $150 for nonmembers.
Bojagi: The Art of Traditional Korean Quilting explores the Korean style of quilting Tuesday to Friday, July 21 to 24, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with Hee-Suk Chung. Cost is $75 for members and $125 for nonmembers.
Papers and Inks: Collage and Writing Workshop encourages creativity in acrylic, watercolor, mixed media and the written word. Cost is $150 for members and $200 for nonmembers for the workshop to be held Wednesday to Friday, July 23 to 25, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Watercolor and Gouache, with nontraditional materials like rollers, rags and eyedroppers, will take place Tuesday, August 19, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Cost is $35 for members and $75 for nonmembers.
Dyed and Gone to Heaven explores the Japanese shibori method of dyeing textiles on Thursday, August 21, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Cost is $25 for members and $50 for nonmembers.
