In order to promote fly-fishing in northwest North Carolina, northeast Tennessee and southwest Virginia, and to create camaraderie among fly-fishers in the area, Trails Crossing Fly-Fishing Outfitter and Guide Service, located at 101 South Shady Avenue in Damascus, Va., is hosting a free fly-fishing party and video viewing at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 24.
In addition to free hot dogs and burgers, the event features a viewing of the new Angler Exploration Group’s movie, Fish Bum I Mongolia. The group’s third video, Fish Bum I Mongolia follows a team of adventure fly-fishers as they travel to the far reaches of northern Mongolia to fish for Taimen trout. The video will be shown on a large LCD projection screen located beside Trails Crossing in the now-defunct Baja Café.
“It’s like a snowboard film done for fly-fishing—that’s the best way to describe it. It’s more action oriented than most people are used to,” said Richard Rominger, co-owner of Trails Crossing and coordinator of the event.
Trails Crossing sells fly-fishing equipment and organizes guided fly-fishing trips to hundreds of locations in the High Country, northeast Tennessee and southwest Virginia. Trails Crossing also features an espresso bar.
Realizing the need for a unifying party for anglers in the area, Rominger organized the event and is hoping it will become an annual affair.
“I don’t think anyone has done this before. It’s something new. Other than Trout Unlimited meetings, no [anglers] get together. I want anglers to come and meet new people, talk fly-fishing and have a good time,” said Rominger. “And I want people in Boone to learn about fly-fishing in this area. It’s only 45 minutes away.”
The event also features a raffle that is free to enter. Raffle prizes include a chest fly-fishing pack from William Joseph, a new fly rod from Courtland Rod Company and various other prizes furnished by Trails Crossing.
William Joseph and Courtland Rod Company sponsor the event.
