The Crossnore School is pleased to announce that two of its own received Forget-Me-Not Awards from Children and Family Services Association-NC at a special ceremony held at the New Bern Riverfront Convention Center in New Bern on May 1. Crossnore School Board of Trustees member and First Vice-Chair David P. Riggins of Charlotte was recognized as Trustee of the Year and Kathy Dellinger, executive assistant, received the award for Excellence in Support Services.
Riggins, a friend to The Crossnore School since 1985 and a board member since 1991, was selected as Trustee of the Year for his “hands-on and tireless” service to The Crossnore School. Dr. Phyllis Crain, executive director for The Crossnore School, nominated Riggins for the award, saying, “It is a pleasure and an honor to serve alongside David as we work to provide hope and healing to the children in our care.” Riggins, owner and president of D. P. Riggins & Associates of Charlotte, has made himself The Crossnore School’s “go-to” person, advocating for the needs of foster children, helping with fundraisers and listening when the children have special needs. No aspect of the school or its operation has gone outside his view. According to Crain, “David is a role model for his work ethic, his business acumen and his devotion to the mission of The Crossnore School.”
Dellinger, a Crossnore School employee for more than 35 years, works as executive assistant to Crain. Dellinger received the award for Excellence in Support Services because she takes personally The Crossnore School’s mission of providing hope and healing in a homelike setting for children from families in crisis. Dellinger’s duties extend beyond the confines of her desk, where she has worked compiling mailings and bulletins, made appearances, coordinated visits from donors and dignitaries and managed acknowledgements. Dellinger remains devoted to the needs of the children and goes out of her way to encourage them. Children might leave The Crossnore School, but Dellinger remains a part of their lives, writing letters, making calls and staying in touch.
The Crossnore School serves nearly 250 abused, abandoned and neglected children each year from across the state of North Carolina.
