“We just collaborate and it’s unique because we are both nonprofits helping each other out,” said Nancy Moretz, treasurer for Green Valley Park.
Green Valley citizens initially established Green Valley Community Park in 2000 to provide recreational and outdoor educational opportunities for the children of the community. The park is located on 12 acres on Big Hill Road off Highway 194, nestled alongside the New River. The facility is home to walking and hiking trails, a canoe ramp, a picnic shelter and an athletic field with future plans for a playground.
In recent years, generous private donations have helped ease the park’s mortgage and projects by local Eagle Scout candidates have helped further beautify the space. In 2006 the park added a picnic shelter and installed a new playground in 2007.
“Having the playground has really increased the usage of the park,” said Moretz.
Mountain Pathways School, a Montessori school, was founded in 1987 by a group of parents and educators who wanted to provide an interdisciplinary education that met the needs of the whole child. They focused on developing an educational atmosphere that would foster self-reliant, self-disciplined children who would grow to adulthood with a lifelong love of learning and the ability and desire to positively contribute to society.
