Avery County Heritage Festival in Plumtree June 7
Story by Anna Oakes
The Avery County Heritage Festival will take place on Saturday, June 7, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at its new location in Plumtree. The annual festival features music, dancers, storytellers and a large group of local genealogists and authors.
The focus of the Heritage Festival is to honor the ancestors of Avery County and their toil
in taming a wild and inhospitable country, a press release for the festival stated.
A country breakfast will be served at Vance Memorial Methodist Church on Highway 19 East from 7:30 to 11:00 a.m., followed by a barbecue lunch at the Spear Grille. Musical entertainment will be at the old Burleson Store Company.
A blacksmith will demonstrate his craft alongside the Toe River, and festival guides will lead tours through the old Tar Heel Mica Company. Three military troop reenactments will also take place.
Family display tents are always a popular attraction of the Heritage Festival. Families up and down the Toe River will present informative displays about the county’s forebears.
Authors will sign their books and genealogists will be available and eager to answer any questions. Fran Clemmons’ new book, From My Front Porch, will be available for sale.
Clemmons, Lloyd Bailey, The Rev. Ralph Buchanan and others will deliver lectures on topics of interest throughout the day.
Families are encouraged to participate by sharing any early photos, stories, tales or other information pertinent to the settlement and early history of this area. Musicians who would like to participate are also encouraged to do so.
