Hawksnest Sends Avalanche of Proceeds to the Watauga Education Foundation
Winter may have given way to spring, but the snows of the past season are still having a significant impact. Hawksnest Ski Mountain has presented the Watauga Education Foundation a check for $2,500. The funds are the proceeds of its Family Snow Sport Safety Event in February, as well as a dollar of each lift ticket sale from snow day rates during the snow skiing, boarding and tubing season.
“We have long been supporters of the Education Foundation,” said Hawksnest owner Lenny Cottom. “As a parent of Watauga County students, I truly appreciate the positive impact the foundation has upon the system. We want to help the foundation provide grants and funding to keep our school system one of the best in the state.”
During its Snow Sport Safety Event in February, Hawksnest gave away free helmets, free equipment rental and free lessons during an event designed to help skiers learn the snow sport Responsibility Code. “It was a great idea,” said Melanie Bullard, the foundation’s executive director. “We are honored to be the beneficiary of such a positive experience for the skiers and snowboarders. We commend Hawksnest and the town of Seven Devils for their work to educate skiers and snowboarders on how to safely enjoy winter sports.”
The Hawksnest donation will be used to help the foundation continue its mission to help all students in Watauga County Schools achieve their highest potential.
For nearly 20 years, the Watauga Education Foundation, through the generous support of this community, has awarded hundreds of thousands of dollars in grants to Watauga County Schools teachers to fund projects and programs that fall outside state and local budgets. These creative endeavors introduce and reinforce arts and enrichment activities for children, improve graduation rates and increase community participation in each public school. The foundation raises money through private donations and various initiatives including the Flapjack Flip raffle and pancake breakfast (December 6, 2008) and Shooting Stars (April 24, 2009)—a premier arts event that allows hundreds of students, representing every public school in the county, to showcase their visual and performing arts talents each year.
