Watauga High School Awards 300 Diplomas Friday
Story by Anna Oakes
About 300 students will receive their high school diplomas on Friday, May 30, when Watauga High School holds its commencement ceremony at Holmes Convocation Center on the Appalachian State University campus.
The graduation takes place at 7:30 p.m. No tickets are required to attend.
Jane Rogers, senior counselor at Watauga High School, said this year’s graduating class is much smaller than usual. But that did not stop the Class of 2008 from raking in more than $2 million in college scholarship awards.
Five students will speak at the graduation ceremony on Friday, including the valedictorian and co-salutatorians, the student body president and the senior class president.
Jeffrey Geldmeier is the 2008 Watauga High School valedictorian. He will attend Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University next year and plans to major in engineering.
Two students, Alex Placentra and Robert Hunt, are tied for salutatorian. Placentra will attend the University of California at Berkeley and is considering studies in electrical engineering or physics. Hunt will attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and major in physics or biomedical engineering.
Ben Vollmer, the student body president, will also attend UNC-Chapel Hill and plans to major in political science. Senior class President Sarah Shields will attend North Carolina State University and study management and design.
Sixteen junior marshals will assist with the ceremony. They are head marshal Jack Villanova and marshals Win Matsuda, Lindsay Kaudelka, Maggie Hunter, Caitlin Townsend, Lyle Sterne, Sean Barber, Alexandra Bauer, Elizabeth Atwell, Daniel Villanova, Taylor Cook, Chris Pawlyszyn, Ashlyn Clark, Kaitlyn Hinshaw, Will Barbour and Jessica Kennedy.
