Inaugural Women of Vision Luncheon June 5
Appalachian Women’s Fund To Present the First Women of Vision Award
Story by Kathleen McFadden
The Appalachian Women’s Fund will present its inaugural fundraiser, the Women of Vision Luncheon, on Thursday, June 5, and welcome the recipient of the group’s first Women of Vision award: Liz Murray.
The movie Homeless to Harvard tells Murray’s story, about how she overcame extreme adversity to obtain an education and better her life. Her determination and courage make her a fine example for the women in this community that the Appalachian Women’s Fund serves.
The June 5 event begins at the Hayes Performing Arts Center in Blowing Rock at 9:00 a.m. with coffee, croissants and conversation. The movie Homeless to Harvard begins at 10:00, promptly followed by the presentation of the Women of Vision award to Murray. At that time, Murray will answer questions about her experiences.
The second half of the event begins at 12:15 at the Blowing Rock Country Club where attendees will be able to bid on a fabulous array of items in a silent auction while enjoying libations and hors d’oeuvres. A seated luncheon follows, and Murray will deliver the keynote address. Topping off the day is a live auction of Girl’s Getaway Trips to exciting places.
Generous businesses and individuals in the community have underwritten the costs of the event, so every cent from ticket sales and auctions will go directly to the fund and will be distributed through the Appalachian Women’s Fund grant program.
A spokesperson from the fund said, “Our mission is to help women and girls in our community create a better life for themselves just as Liz Murray did in her life.”
For a donation of $150, you can participate in all the activities, or sponsor a table for $1,575 and invite eight friends to join you for this full-day event.
For a $50 donation, you can enjoy the morning movie and meet Murray and all of the supporters of the Women of Vision event.
