Avery High School Graduation Friday
Story by Anna Oakes
The Avery High School Class of 2008 will walk across the gymnasium for the final time as students this Friday, June 6, when the school holds its commencement ceremony.
The graduation begins at 7:00 p.m. in the Avery High School gymnasium. Tickets are not required to attend.
Principal Mark Garrett said 132 Avery High School seniors will graduate this year. That’s small compared to typical graduating classes, but this class has been small all four years, he said.
“The class has been very successful academically and athletically,” Garrett said. “It’s a very well-rounded class that gets along pretty well together.” The principal said this class is special to him because he first came to the school when they were freshmen.
The Class of 2008 also is the first class to significantly benefit from the school’s college dual enrollment program, he said. The class averages more than 14 college transfer hours per student, both in the career technical field and the general education field. That translates to more than $275,000 in tuition at a state university, he said.
“That’s pretty substantial,” he added.
Assisting with the ceremony will be junior marshals Katie Ellis, Emily Benfield,
Shelby Barrier, Brittany Hagie, Jordan Taylor, Cailan Calloway, Tyler Laws, Rachel Buchanan, Olivia Watson, Ashley Lindsey, Courtney Vance and Heather Miller.
The valedictorian and salutatorian will be announced on the evening of Thursday, June 5.
