Jubilee Chorus Provides Scholarship Help for Summer Arts Camp

Christy Chenausky and Cherry Johnson of the Watauga Arts Council accept a check for Summer Arts Camp scholarships from Roland Moy, founder of the Jubilee Chorus. The donation will allow eight children to attend the summer camp who otherwise would not be able to participate.More local children will have the opportunity to experience interactive, multidisciplinary arts activities with local artists, as well as rehearse and star in a theatrical production of Robin Hood, thanks to the generous donation of scholarships from the Jubilee Chorus.

On Monday, June 2, Roland Moy, founder of the Jubilee Chorus, presented Watauga Arts Council Executive Director Cherry Johnson and Community Arts Education Coordinator Christy Chenausky with a check for scholarships that will enable eight children to attend Summer Arts Camp. Without scholarship assistance, these children would be unable to participate in the camp. Funds from the well-known Mountainaires Barbershop Quartet supplemented the funds from the Jubilee Chorus.

The Jubilee Chorus is in its twelfth season. Each year, the chorus gathers interested community participants and rehearses and presents an evening of assorted musical selections during the three weeks of the ASU summer session. They will perform on Friday, June 20, at the Banner Elk Presbyterian Church where adult tickets are $7, and Saturday, June 21, at ASUís Rosen Concert Hall where adults tickets are $10. Both performances begin at 7:30 p.m. Ticket sales benefit the scholarship fund for the Watauga Arts Councilís Summer Arts Camp.

The Summer Arts Camp includes participation in a theatrical production, as well as workshops in visual arts, music, improvisational theatre, storytelling and stage makeup. It is open to rising first through rising tenth graders, and will operate Monday to Saturday, June 23 to 28. Performances will be held on Friday, June 27, at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday, June 28, at 3:00 p.m. All activities will take place at the Watauga High School auditorium.

The Arts Council has worked in partnership with Missoula Childrenís Theatre for many years to present local children with an introduction to the performing arts. Missoula Childrenís Theatre, the nationís largest touring childrenís theatre, has been touring extensively for 30 years from Montana to Japan, and will visit more than 1,000 communities this year with 35 teams of tour actor/directors. All MCT shows are original adaptations of classic childrenís stories and fairytalesówith a twist on the classic stories that you know and love.

In this yearís musical adaptation of Robin Hood, the time is simply long ago and the place is the magical, mythical Sherwood Forest. Our hero Robin Hood and his merry band of colorful characters seek the help of the foresters, manage to waylay the aristocrats and set out to rescue Maid Marion and Marionís maid. Prince John tries to stay calm as his sheriff, guards and horsemen botch Robinís arrest, thanks to the aromatic skunks. Wacky humor and an original score add to this fresh new look at a legendary outlaw in a legendary time.

The community is encouraged to attend both the performances of the Jubilee Chorus and the Summer Arts Campís Robin Hood. Ticket sales from both events will help our local children learn and grow in the arts.

For more information on any of these performances, contact the arts council at 828-264-1789 or click to www.watauga-arts.org.
