Mountainhome Music Presents David Johnson and Dixie Dawn Saturday
Next to your barstool or breakfast table, the bright lights and big hits of the jukebox used to offer one of life’s little pleasures. You could drop in a quarter and listen to your favorite song over a beer or grits and gravy. Of course, this era is fading into the technological sunset. But you can bring back these moments and memories during this week’s Mountainhome Music concert featuring David Johnson and the Dixie Dawn Band at the Blowing Rock School Auditorium on Saturday, June 7, at 8:00 p.m.
David Johnson and Dixie are Dawn are part country, part bluegrass, part gospel and part early rock and roll. According to Mountainhome Music Producer Joe Shannon, “They are always energetic, entertaining and an audience favorite. Dixie Dawn has put together a special concert for Mountainhome Music for the past twelve years. This year’s theme is trains, planes and automobiles.”
Darrel Bryant and David Johnson formed the band in 1981, and Dixie Dawn has been the opening act at MerleFest each year. The band has also played at premier tourist attractions in North Carolina and opened for top names in country music. With their diverse musical show filled with medleys, comedy and great playing and singing, they have a following of loyal fans from all over the South.
David Johnson appears regularly on the Mountainhome Music concert series, performing with the Mountainhome Bluegrass Boys, the Studio Band and Joe Shannon. To mention just a few of his honors, he won the Southern Gospel Music Association Studio Musician of the Year award in 1999 and 2001. His CD of original music, Many Roads Home, won a DOVE award nomination in 2001. And his bluegrass gospel song “Sailing with the Master” went to number one on the bluegrass gospel charts in 2005.
In addition to David Johnson, Dixie Dawn includes Darrel Bryant, Kevin Rash, Billy Smith, Julie Griffin, and Ronnie Black. For this concert, singer-songwriter Kathy Beaver from Mount Airy will join the band.
