SCORE Alliance Soccer Camp June 13 to 14
Story by Celeste von Mangan
Children ages 5 to 10 are invited to attend a new two-day soccer camp on Friday, June 13, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, June 14, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Valle Crucis Park. The staff of Alliance Bible Fellowship of Boone is presenting the SCORE Alliance Soccer Camp to give children the opportunity to learn to play soccer in a fun and dynamic training environment. The cost of the camp is $35 and includes a soccer uniform with a jersey—blue and red for boys and pink and gray for girls—shorts, socks, gear bag and ball.
“It’s a lot cheaper than most soccer camps and leagues,” said Scott Burns, Alliance youth pastor. “We started the camp because we felt like we had the soccer resources to do it. So we said, ‘Let’s give it a try.’ This is the first time we’ve tried anything like this and we do have 46 children already signed up, so we are encouraged. We are just trying to wait and see what happens with it.”
Local father Toni Becvinovski is head coach. He brings a wealth of soccer experience to the camp, having played youth, collegiate and professional-level soccer. Becvinovski started playing soccer at age 2 and has coached teams since age 16 in Melbourne, Australia. He played both semiprofessional and professional soccer for Melbourne City, Greene Gully Ajax and Fitzroy City in Australia.
Watauga High School soccer players and former high school players round out the coaching staff and include Luke Robertson, a 2008 Watauga High School graduate. Robertson is attending Mercer University in Georgia this fall and will play soccer at the college. Robertson’s brother Ben will also coach camp participants, as will sister Anna.
“Ben is one of the standouts of the Watauga High School soccer team,” said Burns. “Anna is attending Chapel Hill right now, but she played for the high school when she was a student there.”
Three other student coaches are Laura and Olivia Li, rising freshmen who play for the High Country Travel Association—the local travel team. Katelyn Mullinex, also a player with the High Country Travel Association and a rising freshman at Watauga High School, will coach at the camp; she is planning to try out for the high school team this fall.
“There are some other teenagers that will coach and they are more well known in the soccer culture around here,” said Burns.
At the end of the camp, the children’s families can watch a scrimmage game to see what their children have learned.
“We will have hot dogs and hamburgers for the participants’ families to enjoy during a cookout starting at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday,” said Burns.
Water and snacks will be provided for each camper, although children will need to bring a bag lunch on Saturday.
