The Worthless Son-In-Laws Kick Off
Concerts on the Lawn Friday
Free Show Begins at 5:00 p.m. at Jones House
Story by David Brewer
The Watauga Arts Council’s 16th Annual Concerts on the Lawn music series will kick off this Friday, June 6, with performances by The Worthless Son-In-Laws and Rod Farthing. Taking place at the Jones House in downtown Boone, the show is free and will start at 5:00 p.m. Patrons are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs.
Since they formed formed in 2004, roots-rock and alt. country outfit The Worthless Son-In-Laws have been an ever-present force on the local music scene. The band consists of Jimmy Davidson on rhythm guitar and vocals, Rob Brown on lead guitar and vocals and Rich Crepeau on bass and vocals.
Sonically, the band draws from among a cauldron of alt. country heroes, early indie pop bands and traditional country and old-time songs. Some of the band’s most notable influences include The Jayhawks, Son Volt, R.E.M., The Carter Family and Gram Parsons.
Davidson possesses a keen sense of melody and an innate ability to create dense, detailed narratives about the challenges of everyday life, while Brown’s songs chug along with a laid-back Southern style made for sunny days. For their show at the Jones House, the band will perform a mixture of originals and mountain standards.
The 16th Annual Concerts on the Lawn series is shaping up to be the biggest and most diverse season of music to date. With everything from blues to bluegrass to Dixieland, singer-songwriters and barbershop quartets, there is truly something for every music lover.
