An Appalachian Summer Festival brings one of the biggest names in contemporary dance to the stage of ASU’s Farthing Auditorium on Tuesday, July 8, with the innovative and eclectic Aspen Santa Fe Ballet. The show starts at 8:00 p.m.
Described by New York Times as “a breath of fresh air,” Aspen Santa Fe Ballet Company is comprised of 12 classically trained dancers who perform an eclectic repertoire by some of the world’s foremost choreographers. With a solid foundation in classical ballet, the company’s signature style has encompassed a far-reaching aesthetic vision based on an honest expression of the art of dance.
At the invitation of Bebe Schweppe and Aspen Ballet Company, Jean-Philippe Malaty and Tom Mossbrucker left New York City in 1995 to embark on a vision of creating a professional dance company based in Aspen. As the new millennium approached, so did a special partnership with the City of Santa Fe. Now in its ninth season and uniquely shared by two home communities, Aspen Santa Fe Ballet Company performs to enthusiastic audiences both in the United States and around the world. It is also the proud presenter of world-class guest companies through the Aspen Dance Festival.
Aspen Santa Fe Ballet’s performance includes Sinatra Suite, a work it premiered in 1984 set to music sung by Frank Sinatra with choreography by the renowned Twyla Tharp. Also on the evening’s program is Noir Blanc, a 2002 commissioned work conceived and directed by Moses Pendleton, choreographer and artistic director of the dance-illusionist company MOMIX.
Tickets are $25 or $18 for adults, $15 or $10 for students and $10 or $5 for kids 12 and under.
