Broyhill Chamber Presents “Nature Calls” Concert July 7

Story by Anna Oakes

The Broyhill Chamber Ensemble is a consistent feature of An Appalachian Summer Festival every year, but each of its concerts offers unique themes and featured performers. The next chamber concert takes place on Monday, July 7, at 8:00 p.m. in ASU’s Rosen Concert Hall.

The ensemble is a diverse chamber group specializing in classical, romantic and contemporary works of mixed instrumentation. Gil Morgenstern, who recently stepped down from the role of director of An Appalachian Summer Festival, continues to work with the festival as artistic director for chamber music and as violinist in the Broyhill Chamber Ensemble. Morgenstern is also co-founder and co-artistic director of Nine Circles Chamber Theatre, a creative organization dedicated to exploring the collaborative nature of interdisciplinary performance and expanding the performance traditions of music, theatre and dance.

During the remaining concerts of the festival, the Broyhill Chamber Ensemble will play works from the Reflections series inaugurated by Morgenstern in 2007. The new series combines solo and chamber music with poetry and prose from around the world. The series will travel to New York City, Florida, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Italy.

Music inspired by the sounds of animals is the theme of the July 7 concert titled “Nature Calls.” Works will include George Crumb’s theatrical and haunting Vox Balaenae (Voice of the Whales) for three masked musicians, Franz Schubert’s much-loved Quintet in A Major, nicknamed “The Trout,” as well as a few surprises. This performance features Morgenstern on violin, Kathryn Lockwood on viola, Wilhelmina Smith on cello, Shirley Irek on piano and Linda Chesis on flute.
The Broyhill Chamber Ensemble will perform additional concerts on July 16 and 21.

Tickets are $18 for adults, $10 for students and $5 for children 12 and under. For tickets and information, call 828-262-4046 or click to www.appsummer.org.
