Inaugural High Country Throwdown at Ashe County Park July 12 and 13

Story by Sam Calhoun

The Ashe County Disc Golf Club is hosting the inaugural High Country Throwdown at the Ashe County Disc Golf Course, located in Ashe County Park in Jefferson, on Saturday and Sunday, July 12 and 13. The field for the three-round tournament is limited to 72 players, so Todd Patoprsty, coordinator of the event, is encouraging all interested participants to register early by clicking to www.zonedriven.com/proshop/ or www.thehighcountrydiscgolfclub.com, filling out a registration form and mailing it with a check to High Country Throwdown c/o Innova Disc Golf, 2850 Commerce Drive, Rock Hill, SC 29730.

A sanctioned Professional Disc Golf Association B-Tier event, the High Country Throwdown takes place from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday and from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Sunday.

The cost to enter is $50 for pros in the open, masters and women divisions, and $25 for amateurs in the advanced men, advanced women, advanced masters, intermediate and juniors divisions. Non-Professional Disc Golf Association members will pay an additional $10 fee. All fees include lunch on Saturday, and amateur fees include a free disc, t-shirt and trophies. Preregistration is available until Friday, July 4.

Sponsored by the High Country Disc Golf Club, Innova Disc Golf, Ashe County and the Professional Disc Golf Association, the High Country Throwdown begins with a players’ meeting at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, followed by the first round. After breaking for lunch, players will take to the course for the second round. On Sunday, the third round begins at 10:00 a.m. and is followed by an awards ceremony.

Prior to the event on Friday, July 11, Patoprsty is organizing a river tubing trip at 10:00 a.m. and a doubles tournament at 5:00 p.m. Both events are weather permitting. If interested, call Patoprsty at 336-649-0888.

To get to the Ashe County Disc Golf Course, take Highway 221 off Highway 421 to Wade Bare Road—about 2 miles east of Jefferson. Continue to the end of Wade Bare Road and turn left on North Main Street. After 0.5 miles on North Main Street, turn right onto Ashe Park Road and the park is on the left.
