The Board of Directors of the Watauga Humane Society has spent the last few months drafting its new strategic plan for the next five years and as part of this effort has hired Janet P. Pepin as part time executive director. Pepin begins her position July 9.
Judy Clarke, board chair of the Watauga Humane Society, said, “This decision is timely for us. As an organization, we are faced with increasing needs for animal care within the community, as well as fulfilling our commitment to building our new animal care ‘green’ facility by early summer of 2009. Our board believes Janet’s skills at strategic planning, project management, budgeting, fundraising and personnel management will complement the outstanding skills of animal care, education and shelter management provided by Shelter Manager Lynn Northup and her staff. This combination of leadership and the board members’ continued willingness to volunteer their time and effort will produce timely results as we continue our growth and success within the Watauga community.”
Pepin earned a master’s degree in adult learning from Appalachian State University and a bachelor of arts in organizational psychology from the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth. She resides in Boone with her four-legged companions Sophie and Skyler. Pepin also serves the community as a member of the Boone Town Council and has been an organizational and educational consultant for more than 20 years. She is the part-time executive director of the Volunteer Resource Center and provides strategic support to many local nonprofit organizations.
The Watauga Humane Society was organized in 1969 as a nonprofit charitable organization dedicated to all aspects of animal welfare, and the organization’s animal shelter is located on the eastern edge of Boone. To control the pet population, the Humane Society offers low-cost spay/neuter services. Daily passes are available to the four-acre Dog Park east of Boone off Old Highway 421.
