Where Are You Going To Party On Halloween?

Story by David Brewer

Halloween finally returns to the weekend this year, virtually guaranteeing an increased number of costumed revelers and carousers making their way out for a night of fall madness. Aside from the ASU football game, there will be plenty going on at all your favorite local watering holes. Whether it’s funk you crave or perhaps some down and dirty blues and jazz, nearly every nightspot will be hosting live music.

While there might not be huge prize money at stake, costume contests at nearly all nightspots will be your big chance to prove to all your friends that your life-size Big Bird costume was a good idea after all.

Boone Saloon

828-264-1811
10/31 Bafoodus

- Anybody who was at Boone Saloon during last year’s Halloween blowout knows that Bafoodus knows how to rock the party. While last year’s prime cuts from Prince and Michael Jackson had everybody singing along, word has it that the band is cooking up several new selections for this year’s Saloon Halloween show. Melissa Reaves will make a guest appearance on vocals.

Canyons

828-295-7661
10/31 WSNB

-If you couldn’t possibly care less about dressing to the nines and acting like a crazy person for a few hours, head to Canyons, where award-winning North Carolina blues band WSNB will deliver some of the most low down, dirty music this side of the Mississippi.

Dragonfly Theater

828-262-3222
10/31 Lazybirds

-In what promises to be the most unique show of Halloween night, Boone’s Lazybirds will deliver their rollicking mixture of blues, jazz and country on Halloween at the Dragonfly Theater while Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds plays on the big screen. Mixed media never looked so scary and you’ll never look at blackbirds the same way again.

Flipside

828-268-9683
10/31 Secret B-Sides

- If Asheville’s Secret B-Sides are half as good live as their recorded tunes online suggest, then these guys can seriously boogie. With old school r&b sensibilities coupled with a touch of funk and neo-soul, these guys kick extremely tasty grooves capable of packing the dance floor with sweaty bodies. Flipside will almost certainly be packed with sweaty dancers following the game.

Macado’s

828-264-1375
10/30

-While Macado’s plans to be open for Halloween, the downtown institution is getting a jump on the festivities, holding its actual Halloween party on Thursday, October 30. If you love Macado’s, this party will give you an excuse to go there and party two nights in a row. Thursday night festivities will feature a DJ spinning tunes and the ubiquitous costume contest. There will be a $5 cover.

Murphy’s

828-264-5117
10/31 Solos Unit/Kaze

-Murphy’s will count on one of its most reliable acts to bring the funk on Halloween. Winston-Salem’s Solos Unit will bring their non-stop hip-hop and funky soul party to the friendly confines of Boone’s favorite Irish pub. Also taking the stage will be Triangle hip-hop artist Kaze.

Reid’s Café

828-268-9600
-In what has the potential to attract the most gory costumes of the night, Reid’s Café will host a Texas Chainsaw Masquerade party beginning at 6:00 p.m. The party will feature homemade BBQ and live music from the Melissa Reaves Blues Band. Be sure to stock up on fake blood for this party.

Twigs

828-295-5050
10/31 Nautical Wheelers
-Twigs will celebrate Halloween with a show by regular performers the Nautical Wheelers. Hailing from the North Carolina foothills, the acoustic-based act draws primarily from ‘70s rock including Jimmy Buffett, Jackson Browne and The Eagles.

VFW Post 7031

828-264-9570
-The VFW in Boone will get their party rolling at 8:00 p.m. and will feature live music from none other than The Jacked-Up Hillbillies, as well as DJ Bubba D. The V will offer $100 cash prize for its costume contest and other door prizes including a $200 tattoo from Inflicted Images. Come hungry, as home-cooked BBQ will be served.
