Boone Area National Guardsmen To Be Deployed in the Coming Months
Story by Kristen Street
Close to 60 men and women from the 1451st Transportation Company of the National Guard will be deployed overseas next year. These service men and women, however, will not leave as a unit. They will join troops from other units, all from different places. As of now, the names of the soldiers have not been released, nor have their dates or locations of deployment.
Because of the nature of their deployments, the soldiers will not be able to have a typical military sendoff. They will be called to leave, meet with the other Guardsmen from other companies, and from there go on to training and eventually overseas.
Because a formal sendoff will not be possible, it will be up to community members to make the troops’ departure as appreciated as any other deployment. Local volunteer Barbara Daye said, “They will be people from all over town—from ASU students to local businessmen. Soon they’ll be in uniform, and I look forward to having our usual wonderful community support.”
Details about how to support these troops will be supplied when more info about the deployment has been released. In the meantime, call Barbara Daye at 828-264 2070 for information about how to get involved or sponsor a soldier.
