Appalachian Mountain Photography Competition Submissions Due January 24
Judges for Annual Photo Competition Announced
Photographer Richard Rapfogel’s photo of Rough Ridge on the Blue Ridge Parkway earned him first place the 2008 Blue Ridge Parkway Vista category during the 2008 Appalachian Mountain Photography Competition. Rapfogel is a judge for the 2009 competition.The deadline for submissions for the Appalachian Mountain Photography Competition (AMPC) is Saturday, January 24, 2009, at 5:00 p.m., and its sponsors are hoping local photographers will enter their work into the regional competition. Entering its sixth year, AMPC has grown to be a prominent regional competition attracting the work of amateur and professional photographers from up and down the eastern seaboard. A partnership between ASU Outdoor Programs, Turchin Center for the Visual Arts and the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation, AMPC celebrates the unique people, places and pursuits that distinguish the Southern Appalachians.
Andrew Miller, coordinator with Outdoor Programs at Appalachian State University, announced the judges for the Appalachian Mountain Photography Competition this week. The 2009 Appalachian Mountain Photography Competition judges are Marie Freeman of ASU Creative Services, ASU Technical Photography Professor and Coordinator John Scarlata and award-winning photographer Richard Rapfogel.
“Neals Grocery” by Robert and Shiiko Alexander won a special mention in the 2008 Appalachian Mountain Photography Competition’s Culture category.One change for the 2009 competition is a revision to the Blue Ridge Parkway Share the Journey category. Sponsored by the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation, the Share the Journey category will now feature a specific theme each year that encompasses the collective Parkway experience of individuals, families, friends, pets and special events. This year’s focus for the Share the Journey category is Dogs on the Parkway.
The Appalachian Mountain Photography Competition offers seven categories for submissions including two sponsored by the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation. Freeman, Scarlata and Rapfogel are tasked with reviewing all entries and narrowing them down to approximately 46 that will hang in exhibition at the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts from March 6 through June 6, 2009.
AMPC is a community partnership supported by Bistro Roca and Antlers of Blowing Rock, Footsloggers Outdoor and Travel Outfitters, Peabody’s Beer and Wine Merchants, Mast General Stores and Virtual Blue Ridge.
