Blowing Rock Stage Company Winter Classes Begin February 2

The Blowing Rock Stage Company’s Theatre Education & Outreach Programs (TOPs) offers classes for children and adults that provide an opportunity to explore the areas of self-expression, unique creativity, self-confidence and teamwork. Classes in the 2009 winter session begin February 2 and conclude on March 26 and are held at the Hayes Performing Arts Center in Blowing Rock.

The cost per 8-week session is $85, with the exception of the TAG Conservatory that costs $125.

Prior TOPs students, adult couples and siblings receive 10 percent discount, and tuition waivers are available for those who qualify.

Imagination Station – Storytales of Eric Carle

Dates: Mondays, February 2 to March 23
Time: 5:00 to 6:00 p.m.
Cost: $85
Description: Through movement and art, children ages 5 to 7 will use the stories and artwork of Eric Carle to take a journey to unlock the most active imaginations. The focus is on improvisation, creative play and visual arts.


TOPs Tap!

Dates: Mondays, February 2 to March 23
Time: 6:00 to 7:00 p.m.
Cost: $85
Description: This classic tap class for ages 8 to 12 and ages 13 to 19 uses songs from the American musical theatre genre. Think Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers!


FairyTale Theatre

Dates: Tuesdays, February 3 to March 24
Time: 3:45 to 5:00 p.m.
Cost: $85
Description: Children ages 8 to 10 will celebrate the fairy tales of Hans Christian Andersen. Classes will involve reading the stories and then retelling them as a theatre piece. Students will create their sets, props and costumes, as well as have fun with their characters. The focus is on storytelling, sequencing and memorization.


Intermediate Acting

Dates: Tuesdays, February 3 to March 24
Time: 5:00 to 6:30 p.m.
Cost: $85
Description: Intermediate Acting is for students ages 11 to 18 who have had prior experience on stage. Students focus on writing original material, scene study, monologues and character development. Permission is required from staff for enrollment. The focus is on writing skills, ensemble and enunciation.


Adult Acting

Dates: Tuesdays, February 3 to March 24
Time: 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.
Cost: $85
Description: This class is designed to meet the needs of the adult student, age 20 and up, at any level of training and experience. Students will use scene study to explore character choices dictated by the text. No experience is required. The focus is on scene structure and characterization.


TAG Conservatory

Dates: Wednesdays, February 4 to May 13
Time: 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.
Cost: $125
Description: TAG stands for Teen Actors’ Guild, and the TAG Conservatory is for those aged 13 to 18 who have had substantial stage experience and are seriously focused on theatre arts. TAG is a performance-based group, and the conservatory is by audition only. The focus is on communication of intentions, objectives, rehearsal and performance standards.


Beginning Acting

Dates: Thursdays, February 5 to March 26
Time: 4:00 to 5:30 p.m.
Cost: $85
Description: In this beginners’ class for ages 11 to 18, little or no prior acting experience is required. Beginners focus on staging and teamwork skills, as well as improvisation and stage geography.
