Get Ready for Baseball and Tennis!
Watauga County Parks and Rec Registering Now
In just a few short months, recreational baseball will begin another action-packed season, and Watauga County Parks and Recreation is registering kids and adults now for leagues and umpire clinics. Registrations are also being accepted for junior tennis.

Adult Softball Registration
The Recreation Department offers six divisions of adult softball during the spring season: Men’s Open A (most competitive league), Men’s Open B, Men’s Open C, Men’s Open D (recreational), Men’s Church League and Women’s Open League.
The entry fee for Men’s Open A, Open B, and Open C is $515 per team, and teams are guaranteed 18 games. The entry fee for Men’s Open D, Men’s Church, and Women’s Open leagues is $450, and teams are guaranteed 15 games.
Games will be played Monday to Friday with start times ranging from 6:00 to 9:45 p.m. The registration deadline is 5:00 p.m. on Monday, April 6.
ASA Softball Umpire’s Clinic
In the ASA Softball Umpire’s Clinic, umpires and prospective umpires will learn ASA slow pitch softball rules, umpire duties, mechanics and more. The clinic will be held Saturday, April 4, at the Optimist Clubhouse in Boone. Those who wish to umpire slow pitch softball in Watauga County are required to attend this clinic.
The registration fee is $25 per person and must be paid the day of the clinic. Rulebook, class materials and lunch are provided. Preregistration for the clinic is required.
Little League Baseball Umpire’s Clinic
The Little League Baseball Umpire’s Clinic will be held Saturday and Sunday, March 28 and 29, at the Optimist Clubhouse in Boone. Attendance on both days is mandatory. Those who wish to officiate Little League baseball in Watauga County are required to attend this clinic. However, this clinic is also open to those who want to umpire in the surrounding counties.
The registration fee is $25 per person and includes a rulebook, casebook, class materials and lunch on Saturday. Preregistration for the clinic is required.
T-Ball and Coach Pitch Baseball
T-Ball is co-ed for ages 5 and 6, Coach Pitch Baseball is co-ed for ages 7 and 8, and Coach Pitch Softball if for girls ages 7 and 8.
In both leagues, players learn the basics and fundamentals of baseball, and a reduced risk factor ball is used. The season runs approximately 8 to 10 weeks. Teams meet three times per week for practices and games. No score is kept. When able, teams are formed by geographical location.
The registration fee is $33 per child, and all participants must be registered by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, March 20.
Major II Little League Baseball
Major II Little League Baseball is the first level of player pitch baseball and is for children who are ages 9 and 10 as of April 30, 2009. Players learn and develop the fundamentals of baseball. This is the first level of competitive play in which score is kept. The program runs approximately 10 to 12 weeks. Teams meet four times each week for practices and games. Placement drills are required for all players. At the end of the season, All-Star teams are formed.
The registration fee is $55, and all participants must be registered by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, March 20.
Major I Little League Baseball
Major I Little League Baseball is for children who are ages 11 and 12 as of April 30, 2009.
In this league, the fundamentals of baseball continue to be developed, competition is introduced, team skills are developed and sportsmanship is stressed. The season runs approximately three months. All-Star teams are formed at the end of the season. Teams meet four times each week for practices and games. Placement drills are required for all players.
The registration fee is $55, and all participants must be registered by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, March 6.
Jr. League Baseball
Jr. League Baseball is for children who are ages 13 to 15 as of April 30, 2009.
In this league, the fundamentals of baseball continue to be developed, competition is established, team skills are developed and sportsmanship is stressed. The season runs approximately 6 to 8 weeks. All-Star teams are formed at the end of the season. Teams meet four times each week for practices and games. Placement drills are required for all players.
The registration fee is $55, and all participants must be registered by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, April 24.
Junior Tennis Team
The Junior Tennis Team program is for children ages 7 to 15 and begins the week of June 1 or the day after school is out.
Four levels of lessons are offered: true beginner (first year player), beginner (second/third year player), intermediate and advanced. The beginners start with learning and then mastering the basics of tennis. The intermediate and advanced players are taught strokes and strategies. This program allows children to advance at their own pace. Practices will be held at the Recreation Complex tennis courts every Monday, Wednesday and Friday through July 31.
In addition to lessons and practices, tennis matches for advanced players are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout the season.
Registration will continue to be accepted throughout the Junior Tennis Team Season. The registration fee is $80 per child.
