Ice Carving Competition and Demonstrations January 24 and 25
Watch the water fly as some of the best in the ice sculpting business create works of art from large blocks of ice. Winterfest’s ice carving competition at Memorial Park takes place on Saturday, January 24, at 12:00 p.m., and demonstrations take place on Sunday, January 25, at 1:00 p.m.Chainsaws and blowtorches are all you need to transform blocks of ice into works of art. The best in the ice-sculpting business will be on hand to compete and demonstrate their trade as part of Winterfest’s ice carving competition and demonstrations on Saturday and Sunday, January 24 and 25, at Memorial Park in downtown Blowing Rock.
The ice carving competition begins at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, and demonstrations take place at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday. Ice Sensations, a company with franchises throughout the Carolinas, sponsors the events.
Carol Horne, one of Winterfest’s coordinators, said the ice carving competition is open to anyone but will mostly include ice sculptors trained by Ice Sensations from across the state and region. “We welcome local people as well,” she said.
Sculptors have 30 minutes to carve a block of ice that is about three or four feet cubed, and spectators at Memorial Park will determine the winner. The sculptures will remain in Memorial Park until nature takes its toll.
“If it’s nice and cold they’ll last for a long time,” Horne said, noting that one year the sculptures stuck around for at least a month after Winterfest.
