In 1983, the Great Cardboard Box Race began at Ski Beech in Beech Mountain, kicking off an annual Winterfest tradition at the ski resort. The resort discontinued the event for several years, but on Saturday and Sunday, January 24 and 25, Winterfest is back with the Great Cardboard Box Derby, the Bathing Beauty bikini contest, a Village Rail Jam, live music and plenty more activities.
Start planning now for the Great Cardboard Box Derby, Winterfest’s original, signature event. Prizes are available for the fastest, the most original and the best looking cardboard box entries. Registration will be accepted from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, January 25, at the Ski Beech Administration Building. Entry fees are $25. Judging will take place at 12:00 p.m. at the ice skating rink, and the race begins at 2:00 p.m. on the Free Style Ski Slope. The derby has specific rules for entries, race procedures, box structure and decorations. For a list of rules, call 1-800-438-2093.
On Saturday, January 24, face painting will be available throughout the day session. The famous Bathing Beauty bikini contest returns at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. Male and female contestants must ski or snowboard and be judged for beauty, poise, outrageousness and originality at the Play Yard Ski Slope. The entry fee is $10. From 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., enjoy a cookout and live bluegrass music on the View Haus Deck.
The Red Bull Village Rail Jam follows from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday at Ski Beech’s new terrain park. Skiers and snowboarders will show off their tricks, prizes will be awarded and a DJ will play music. Red Bull will host an after-party in the Beech Tree Bar and Grille afterward. The Shane Pruitt Band performs at the Beech Tree Bar and Grille from 8:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m.
Other events on Sunday, January 25, include the Waiter/Waitress Race at 11:00 a.m. at the Play Yard Ski Slope. Servers from High Country restaurants will compete on skis or snowboards while balancing a tray of beverages. The entry fee is $10. The Ski Beech Sports Fashion Show follows the Cardboard Box Derby at 3:30 p.m. at the Beech Tree Bar and Grille. In addition, ski and snowboard demonstrations will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday.
The costs of lift tickets and equipment rentals vary. Participants in any of the contests will receive a discounted lift ticket for the day. For more information, call 1-800-438-2093 or 828-387-2011.
