The local chapter of the nationwide Karma Krew organization, in conjunction with Bonne’s Neighborhood Yoga, is hosting a Yogathon on Sunday, January 25, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The Yogathon, held on National Yoga Day, will be a full day of unled yoga, with light snacks of fruit and water. Participants will pledge a minimum of two hours of yoga and need to raise a minimum of $50.

The Karma Krew is a nonprofit organization with the mantra to “do good things.” They help create opportunities for yoga practitioners to be more involved directly with their communities through service projects. The Boone chapter, Neighborhood Karma Krew, began last April with a group of yoga teacher trainees. Their projects so far have included teaching yoga in a children’s home, creating a butterfly garden at Leola Street Community Garden, volunteering for an afternoon at Genesis Wildlife rehabilitation center and offering discounted yoga classes to teachers in the community.

The coming year holds much in the way of projects for the Karma Krew, with monthly themed service projects planned for each chapter. The Yogathon is a way to raise money to make these projects a reality. Lis McCachren, one of the event’s coordinators, said, “We are hoping to raise $3,500 dollars, with all donations going to support 2009 Neighborhood Karma Krew projects.”

To participate, pick up a sponsorship packet at Neighborhood Yoga. The packets were due back to Neighborhood Yoga by Wednesday, January 21, but if you missed the deadline, get in contact with the Karma Krew, because space may be available. McCachren is eager to bring this event to Boone. “We’re just really excited that his event can help build the yoga community in Boone, and in the surrounding community. Through this event we’ll be able to raise funds to foster future projects to expand the yoga community to places that don’t already have access to yoga.”
