The 1960s pop stars Gary Lewis & the Playboys perform in Wilkesboro on Saturday, January 31, at The Walker Center on the campus of Wilkes Community College.
The performers of the 1960s’ hit pop song “This Diamond Ring” are headed to Wilkesboro at the end of the month. Gary Lewis & the Playboys play The Walker Center on the campus of Wilkes Community College on Saturday, January 31, at 8:00 p.m.
In 40 years, Gary Lewis & the Playboys have amassed eight Gold Singles, 17 Top 40 hits and four Gold Albums and have sold 45 million records worldwide. The son of comedian, actor and Labor Day telethon host Jerry Lewis, Gary Lewis was the first and only artist during the 1960s to have his first seven releases reach Billboard magazine’s Top 10 on the Hot 100 chart.
The band began performing at Disneyland in the early 1960s and in 1964 was discovered by producer Snuff Garrett. The band’s debut single “This Diamond Ring” hit No. 1 in 1965, followed by a No. 2 single, “Count Me In.” Other hit songs include “Save Your Heart For Me,” “Everybody Loves a Clown,” “She’s Just My Style” and “Sure Gonna Miss Her.”
The band appeared frequently on the Ed Sullivan Show as well as American Bandstand, Hullabaloo and The Tonight Show. The 5-piece band currently includes Lewis, Mike Arturi, Brad Henderson, Nick Rather and Bryan Fox, and the group continues to tour internationally.
Tickets to the Walker Center performance are $39 for adults and $37 for seniors, students and children. Concertgoers can also attend a dinner before the show in The Walker Center’s Lakey Ballroom. Advance reservations are required for the 6:30 p.m. dinner that costs $18 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under.
