Hunan Chinese Restaurant of Boone Wins National Top 100 Award
Hunan Chinese Restaurant owner Yibiao Wang traveled to the Rios Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas on Monday, January 5, to receive an award for Top 100 Local Favorites at the 5th Annual Top 100 Chinese Restaurant Awards.
For more than 20 years, Hunan Chinese Restaurant, located at 214 Southgate Drive in Boone, has served thousands of customers from the High Country and beyond with traditional Chinese dishes and modern Asian cuisine. During the last week of December, owner Yibiao Wang was informed that the restaurant had been voted one of the Top 100 Local Favorites in the 5th Annual Chinese Restaurant News Awards.
“This is kind of a big thing for us,” said Wang. “A lot of customers really like our food and compare us to restaurants in big cities like New York.”
Organized and hosted by Chinese Restaurant News, the Top 100 Chinese Restaurants Awards Show spotlights the best of Chinese cuisine in the United States. The Chinese Restaurant News was founded in 1995 to inform the Chinese-speaking owners and operators of Chinese restaurants in the United States of industry news and trends.
Wang traveled to Las Vegas during the first week of January, where he accepted the award during a ceremony at the Rios Hotel and Casino. Presenters included Master Chef Martin Yan, the celebrated host of more than 3,000 cooking shows, and chef and author Theresa Lin, who was complimented as “The Julia Child of Taiwan” by director Ang Lee of Eat Drink Man Woman.
From suburban buffets to high-end restaurants, Chinese cuisine has become a fixture of the American daily dining scene. The Chinese restaurant industry has more than $20 billion annual sales in the more than 43,000 restaurants operating in the United States.
Wang, who has worked at Hunan since 2000 and took over the operation two years ago, credited the restaurant’s loyal customer base, longtime chef, dedicated staff and previous owner for setting and keeping standards high at the local eatery.
