It’s Bee Season!
Avery, Watauga Schools’ Spelling Bees Take Place in February
Last year, Baron Fenwick of Green Valley School won the Watauga County Spelling Bee and advanced to the regional and the national spelling bees. Spelling bees in Avery and Watauga counties take place in February and the Boone Area Chamber of Commerce’s Spelling Bee for Grown-Ups is in March.
Embezzlement. Nonchalant. Intercessory. Solatium. Spherocytosis.
All are words that Watauga County’s Baron Fenwick successfully spelled in an exciting run from the county spelling bee all the way to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., last year. The eighth-grader from Green Valley School was the champion in the Watauga County and Winston-Salem Journal Regional spelling bees and reached the semifinal round of the national bee.
The spelling bee season returns in February as Watauga County and Avery County schools each host countywide bees.
The Avery County Schools 31st Annual Spelling Bee will take place on Wednesday, February 4, at 9:00 a.m. at the WECR radio station in Newland. Students in grades 3 through 8 are eligible for the bee, and each elementary school will hold its own bee to determine the representative at the county competition.
The winner of the spelling bee will receive $50 and will represent Avery County in the 69th Annual Winston-Salem Journal Regional Spelling Bee in Winston-Salem on March 22. To hear a live broadcast of the spelling bee, tune your radio to 1130 AM. For more info, call 828-733-6006.
The Watauga County Schools Spelling Bee, sponsored by the Boone Area Chamber of Commerce, will take place two weeks later, on Wednesday, February 18. The event begins at 9:00 a.m. at the Gragg Education Center on Pioneer Trail, just off N.C. 194 North in Boone.
In Watauga County, students first compete at the homeroom level, then at their grade levels and finally at the schoolwide level to determine a contestant from each of the county’s eight elementary schools. The winner of the county spelling bee will receive prizes from the Chamber of Commerce and advance to the regionals in Winston-Salem. The spelling bee is open to the public. For more info, call 828-264-7190.
Finally, the Boone Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual Spelling Bee for Grown-Ups will be held on Tuesday, March 24, at the Broyhill Inn and Conference Center at 5:00 p.m. Teams from various businesses and organizations compete in the spelling bee and may pay extra money to stay in the contest if they miss a word. The event is a fundraiser for the Watauga Education Foundation. For more info, call 828-264-2225.
