The Town of Beech Mountain Parks and Recreation Department presents the inaugural High Country Chili Cookoff on Saturday, January 31, at the Buckeye Recreation Center in Beech Mountain. The event is a fundraiser for new equipment and improvements to the Buckeye Lake Community Playground.
The tasty competition lasts from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and the winners will be announced at 2:00 p.m. A bluegrass band will perform.
All types of chili will be accepted for the competition that will be divided into individual and business categories. Cookoff participants must provide at least two gallons of chili for everyone to taste. No entry fee is required.
Admission to the chili cookoff is $2. The attendees will determine the winners of the cookoff by a vote. More than $300 in prizes will be awarded to the first-, second- and third-place winners in the individual and business categories. Additionally, the chili chefs with the most creative outfits will win a prize for Best Cook’s Costume.
The Buckeye Recreation Center will provide tables, spoons, napkins, bowls and plenty of sides and toppings, but contestants can bring special items if they wish. Electrical outlets will be available to each participant, but contestants may also use alternative heating sources such as Sterno cans.
