Watauga Humane Society to Close Bare Bones Boutique
At its board meeting in January, the Watauga Humane Society Board of Directors made a difficult but necessary decision to close its thrift store fundraising operation known as the Bare Bones Boutique. As a fiduciary body responsible for protecting the finances of the nonprofit corporation, the Board of Directors had been comparing the monthly sales figures against the operational expenses over the last several months and determined it could not continue to support the thrift store as a fundraising enterprise.
Lisa Van Arnam, president of the Watauga Humane Society, said, “This decision was one of our most difficult as we had to balance the personal factors along with the business factors. We knew in making this decision that there would be a large number of disappointed patrons as we had heard over and over again how important the operation was to our regular shoppers. We also knew in making this decision that Wanda Gragg, as manager of the boutique over the last two years, had worked very hard to increase sales and provide her customers with excellent service. However, the increase in costs and decrease in sales had reached a point where the business factors overwhelmed the personal ones and we could no longer justify to our members or to our donors the continuation of the operation.”
The Bare Bones Boutique is located off of Old Highway 421 past Brown Chapel Road and will remain open for business until Saturday, February 28. From now until then, all merchandise is available at a special sale price of 3 for 1: the highest priced item plus two of equal or lesser value for free. Donated items will no longer be accepted at the boutique but for those wishing to donate items to the annual rummage sale scheduled for July 2009, a special donation timeframe and location will be announced soon.
