Winter Reading Program Brings Readers Hot Prizes in Cold Weather
Library Staffer Owen Gray has chosen a bit of light reading for the Library’s Winter Reading Program. Photo by Kristen StreetThe Watauga County Public Library’s Winter Reading Program for adults started Monday, January 26, and will continue until Saturday, March 21. The event is free for participants, and it has a lot to offer.
Every winter, the library invites all readers over age 16 to participate in the Winter Reading Program. One of the best defenses against the cold is a blanket and a good book, and with the Winter Reading Program, participants can arm themselves with a selection of good reads and then share their reviews and recommendations with other readers.
Participants choose books (they do not have to be from the library), read them and then fill out a short form available at the library, offering their comments on the books they’ve read. The forms will be on display in a special area in the library’s entranceway, along with a selection of seasonally appropriate books and books on CD for quick checkout.
Each time a participant reads and reviews five books, he or she can draw for a chance at a prize from the prize box. So far, Marble Slab Creamery, Earth Fare, App Ski Mountain and other local businesses have donated prizes.
Readers who want more information about the program and local merchants who would like to promote their businesses and encourage reading in the community by donating a prize for the prize box can contact the Reference Desk of the Watauga County Library at 828-264-8784.
