Author Robert Morgan to Speak at the Library February 11
Renowned writer Robert Morgan, who has authored such books as Gap Creek, The Balm of Gilead Tree and The Hinterlands, will speak and read from his book Boone: A Biography at the Watauga County Public Library on Wednesday, February 11, at 6:30 p.m.
Morgan was raised on a family farm in Hendersonville, and later received his B.A. in English from UNC-Chapel Hill and his master of fine arts degree from UNC-Greensboro. He teaches at Cornell University; has written novels, short stories and numerous volumes of poetry; and has received a Guggenheim fellowship, a Rockefeller Foundation fellowship, the James G. Hanes Poetry Prize from the Fellowship of Southern Writers and the North Carolina Literature Award. His novel Gap Creek was an Oprah’s Book Club Book and was on the New York Times bestseller list.
Boone is being hailed as the best biography of Daniel Boone written to date. The book’s jacket reads, “The story of Daniel Boone is the story of America— its ideals, its promise, its romance, and its destiny. Robert Morgan reveals the complex character of a frontiersman whose heroic life was far stranger and more fascinating than the myths that surround him.”
Throughout the past months, Robert Morgan has given much to this community in the way of presentations and talks about his book. Aside from taking part in Daniel Boone Days, he has co-taught classes at Appalachian State University, including the Senior Seminar in Creative Writing with ASU’s Joseph Bathanti and a seminar about Boone with ASU’s Sandy Ballard.
