ASU Chamber Orchestra Sunday
The Appalachian Chamber Orchestra will perform Sunday, February 8, at 2:00 p.m. in Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free. James Allen Anderson directs the chamber orchestra.
The program is comprised of Hector Berlioz’s overture to Le Corsaire, Op. 21 and Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 in E-flat major, Op. 55.
Berlioz composed the overture in 1844, and revised it between 1846 and 1851. The composition is considered one of Berlioz’s most brilliant and popular orchestral pieces.
Beethoven’s symphony, known as the “Eroica” or heroic symphony, was written in 1804 as a tribute to Napoleon Bonaparte. However, when Napoleon declared himself emperor, Beethoven tore the composition’s title page, saying that Napoleon was “nothing more than an ordinary man.”
Known for his musical surprises designed to catch his audiences’ attention, Beethoven uses what seem to be off-key notes as the violins and horns set up a dissonance that is repeated throughout the composition. The work was considered revolutionary as it broke the pattern of previous symphonies.

Amanda Smith, a senior music education major in the Hayes School of Music, will perform a trumpet concert in the Recital Hall at 4:00 p.m. Admission is free.

Whitney, “Mai” by Ryo Noda and “Partita” by Erwin Dressel.
Kallestad is a native of North Dakota. An accomplished performer and clinician, Kallestad teaches and performs on all the saxophones. He has presented clinics on a variety of saxophone topics.
